Opt for Safe Abortion and Save a Life

Every year, more than 25 million avoidable unsafe abortions occur. Legal restrictions and lack of safe options mean that women and adolescent girls unnecessarily risk their health and lives every day. At Vardaan Hospital, we believe that everyone has a right to safe and legal abortion services, products and information, as well as post-abortion care and contraception.

Educating Women About Safe Abortion

Our primary objective is to educate women about safe abortion and help reduce the stigma surrounding it. We disseminate information directly to women about legal and safe abortion options, post-abortion care, contraceptive methods and when and where to seek follow-up care. We use multiple media channels, creative technology solutions (like smartphone apps, chatbots and hotlines) and interpersonal communication to educate, connect and combat stigma.

Statistical Approach

Each year, 22 million unsafe abortions are estimated to take place. Nearly all unsafe abortions (98%) occur in developing countries like India. The total number of unsafe abortions has increased from about 20 million in 2003 to 22 million in 2008, although the global rate of unsafe abortion has remained unchanged since 2000.

Approximately 47 000 pregnancy-related deaths are due to complications of unsafe abortion. In addition, 5 million women are estimated to suffer disability as a result of complications due to unsafe abortion.

Use of Contraceptives

Impressive gains in contraceptive use have resulted in reducing the number of unintended pregnancies but have not eliminated the need for access to safe abortion. An estimated 33 million contraceptive users worldwide are expected to experience accidental pregnancy annually while using contraception. Some of the accidental pregnancies are terminated by induced abortions, and some end up as unplanned births.

In almost all countries, the law permits abortion to save the woman’s life, and in the majority of countries, abortion is allowed to preserve the physical and/or mental health of the woman. Therefore, safe abortion services, as provided by law, need to be available.

WHO Guidelines

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends three methods of safe abortion, depending on how far along the pregnancy is.

These are Medical Abortion (MA), Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA), and Dilatation and Evacuation.

Medical abortion (MA)

Medical abortion is the use of mifepristone and misoprostol pills, or misoprostol pills alone, to induce an abortion. This method can be used up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, but different doses and regimens apply, depending on the duration of pregnancy.

Vacuum aspiration (VA)

Vacuum aspiration (VA) involves evacuation of the contents of the uterus, either manually by the use of a hand-held plastic aspirator (MVA) or with an electric vacuum pump (EVA). This can also be done with an electric vacuum pump (EVA). This method has a success rate of 95-100% up to 14 weeks of pregnancy. Depending on the duration of pregnancy, abortion with vacuum aspiration takes from 3 to 10 minutes to complete and can be performed at the primary level on an outpatient basis using a local anaesthetic. Most women feel well enough to go home after 30 minutes.

Dilatation and Evacuation (D&E)

Dilatation and evacuation (D&E) require a skilled, experienced provider. It is used in the second trimester usually after 14 weeks of pregnancy. A D&E procedure can usually be performed on an outpatient basis. A general anaesthetic is not required and can increase risk. A D&E procedure usually takes no more than 30 minutes to perform.
